Around 40 lakh people were left out of Assam's draft National Register of Citizens (NRC) and the apex court said that issuance of notice to those who filed claims and objections will commence on February 1, 2019, and the verification would be done from February 15.

Large number of illegal migrants, who did not find a mention in Assam’s draft NRC, might try to enter the state to evade deportation, AAPSU general secretary Tobom Dai said.
Earlier this week, the complete draft of the NRC has included 2,89,83,677 people out of a total 3,29,91,384 applicants. However, names of around 40.07 lakh applicants did not figure in the list.
