Police was alerted after a passerby found the suspected explosive with electric wiring and an attached battery near New Sudhagad School, an official said.
According to police sources, a bomb disposal squad defused the object on Tuesday morning, after which traffic was restored.
The process of evacuation was underway and the 11 injured jawans were airlifted to Ranchi for treatment.
A bottle filled with a liquid material and a polybag filled with some solid material was found on the roadside near Kallar chowk along the highway in the morning, Rajouri SSP Yougal Manhas said.
The patrolling team, comprising personnel from the DRG and the Special Task Force, was cordoning off a forest at a hill near Gogunda, when the ultras triggered the IED blast, he said.

A thick security blanket of around 60,000 personnel, and drones, has been thrown around the three constituencies-Rajnandgaon, Kanker and Mahasamund - of the state where polling is being held in the second phase of Lok Sabha elections.
Narayanpur district falls in Bastar Lok Sabha constituency that witnessed voting in the first phase on April 11.
"The explosion took place around 4.15 am in Farasgaon area on Narayanpur-Dandwan road when a team of security men was escorting polling personnel to their booth," the official said.
The blast took place in Gatta-Ettapalli area of the district in the evening where the troops of the 191st battalion were on patrol.
Bhima Mandavi was a rising tribal leader who had been elected to the state assembly thrice.
A team of police reached the spot soon after the report of the blast and investigation in the matter was underway.
The Times of India reports that an improvised explosive device (IED) was found in a state transport bus at Apta, about 15km from Panvel, in Raigad district.
The report also analysed the recent history of IED blasts in Kashmir and found terrorists were using military-grade explosives such as RDX, PETN (Pentaerythritol Tetranitrate), TNT (Trinitrotoluene) and commercial explosives such as slurries and ammonium nitrate for fabricating IEDs.
While the state that shares border with both Pakistan and China saw a total of 37 incidents of bombing in 2014, these incidents grew to 46 in 2015, 69 in 2016, 70 in 2017 and as high as 117 during the last year.
