Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay on Thursday alleged a conspiracy in the deadly stampede in Tamil Nadu's Karur last year that had claimed 41 lives and said that he is also a victim, seeking justice over the incident. The actor-turned-politician was addressing a poll rally in Tiruchirappalli after filing his nomination for the upcoming assembly elections in the coastal state.
"I, who have come to ask justice for you, also want justice," he said.
The incident had happened on September 27 last year during a rally of Vijay. It left 41 dead, while many others were injured. The case was transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Vijay had appeared before the probe agency at its New Delhi headquarters last month. Before this, he was grilled by the agency twice in January.
Vijay attacks Stalin, Centre
During his election rally on Thursday, the TVK chief also took a dig at the Centre and the Tamil Nadu government over shortage of LPG cylinders and said that the crisis could have been averted had it been planned in a better way. He said that both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) were on the same page, urging the people to reject them in the upcoming polls.
Continuing his attack on Chief Minister MK Stalin, Vijay said the DMK has formed "cash box alliance" (gallapetti kootani) and has "illegitimate ties" with others. He even claimed that the DMK is making false promises to the people of Tamil Nadu, but asserted that his party will never do such a thing.
"As I have been saying, the poll battle is only between TVK and DMK. Our primary focus will be education, ration, health, drinking water, amenities including improving amenities in government-run schools, and transportation," he said.
Elections in Tamil Nadu will be held in a single phase on April 23. The results will be declared on May 4.
