Dhaka: In his second engagement of the day here, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday visited the Bangabandhu Memorial Museum to pay tribute to the founder of Bangladesh, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.


Modi, who arrived here in the morning on a two-day visit, tweeted: "After tributes to the martyrs, paying respects to Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at Bangabandhu Memorial Museum.

"Bangabandhu lived here from 1961 till his assassination on the night of August 14-15, 1975," he tweeted.

Modi, who went through all the exhibits at the museum, tweeted some photos from the venue: "Pictures from the house where history was scripted by Bangabandhu."

The two-storey museum is the former house of Mujibur Rahman.

It has a collection of the Bangabandhu's personal effects and photographs of his life journey, especially during the tumultuous period that led to the creation of Bangladesh in 1971.

Modi earlier visited the National Martyrs' Memorial to pay tribute to the soldiers who died in the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971.

Earlier, Modi was welcomed by Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport here.Modi has said his two-day "historic" visit to Bangladesh would strengthen ties between the two countries.

Modi on Saturday thanked Hasina for the warm welcome.

"Thank you PM Sheikh Hasina for the warm welcome. I look forward to a very good visit that will strengthen ties between India and Bangladesh."Modi got a ceremonial welcome at the airport, after which he inspected a guard of honour.

Posting a picture when he was received by Hasina at the airport, Modi tweeted: "Protocol broken to welcome a friend... PM Hasina welcomes PM to Dhaka and a historic visit begins."

He added: "Hello Bangladesh! I bring with me the affection and goodwill of the people of India."
