A 10-year-old boy was killed on Sunday in an accident on a ride at the Schlitterbahn Water Park in Kansas City, Kansas, officials said.

Schlitterbahn Water Park spokeswoman Winter Prosapio told media that the boy died on one of the park's main attractions, Verruckt, a 168 ft tall water slide.

As per NBC News, the boy was identified as Caleb Schwab, the son of state Representative Scott Schwab of Olathe and his wife Michele.

"Michele and I want to thank the Olathe and Kansas City, Kansas communities and all of our friends and family for their outpouring of support and compassion as it relates to the sudden loss of our son, Caleb Thomas Schwab," Scott Schwab said in a statement.

"Since the day he was born, he brought abundant joy to our family and all those he came in contact with," he said.

The water park said in its initial report that the boy was 12, but a family spokesman clarified late Sunday that he was 10.

"Given that safety is our first priority, we have closed the Kansas City park on Sunday and Monday and have closed the ride pending a full investigation," it said.

The Verruckt water slide, which is known as the world's tallest water slide, opened in 2014. Riders have to climb 264 stairs to get to the top, which is higher than Niagara Falls, as per reports.

The Verruckt - a German word for "insane" or "crazy" - drops riders almost 169 feet at 65 mph. The whole ride lasts about 11 seconds.

NBC News reported, that the Verruckt was certified as the world's tallest water slide by Guinness World Records.
