New Delhi, Sep 9: Facing attack from BJP on the issue of terrorism, Government today came down heavily on the main Opposition party, saying that it was “not in the DNA of BJP” to be bipartisan.

Soon after BJP leaders Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley addressed a press conference to attack government, Home Minister P Chidambaram and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal hit back.

“It is deeply unfortunate that BJP should have so quickly given up the whatever pretence of bipartisanship was shown two days ago...It is not in the DNA of BJP to maintain bipartisanship,” Chidambaram told a press conference along with Bansal.

He slammed Swaraj and Jaitley for addressing press on Delhi High Court bomb blast, saying he did not recall Leaders of Opposition after Parliament attack (in December 2001 when NDA was in power) holding a press conference.

Bansal said out of 140-hour Monsoon Session, 66 hours were lost due to uproar created by BJP even though the government had expressed readiness to hold discussions on any issue.

“They (BJP) are expressing happiness, claiming they had an upper hand during the Session. This is unfortunate. Their real face has been exposed,” he said, adding that the “dignity” of Parliament has been lowered and people should ponder over it.

Chidambaram said it was “unfortunate” that Swaraj and Jaitley had addressed press on the issue of terrorism just two days after the Delhi High Court blast considering that India and its neighbourhood face terrible problem of terrorism.

“When Delhi High Court blast took place, there was a terror attack in Quetta (in Pakistan). There has been a long list of terror attacks in the months of July and August worldwide... India is under the shadow of terror. The centre of terror is Pakistan and Afghanistan,” he said.

“We live in a troubled neighbourhood. What can we do except building capacities brick by brick to prevent a terror attack,” the Home Minister said.

On Jaitley's contention that six cases of terror which occurred during his tenure were unresolved, Chidambaram shot back, saying the BJP leader “forgets that there are state governments” in the country which handle such issues.

He referred to the Chinaswamay Stadium blast in Bangalore of April last year and said it was handled by “the BJP government (headed by B S Yeddyurappa) which he (Jaitley) tried to save for several days”.

He argued that the case was not handed over to the specialised National Investigative Agency (NIA) as only few people were injured in it.

He also mentioned Varanasi blast and said it was being probed by Uttar Pradesh police, which said it could handle it.  He said he was “disappointed” that these cases remained unresolved but “I cannot take responsibility” for these.

At the same time, he also talked about four unresolved cases of Delhi—Mehrauli blast, Jama Masjid shootout, May 25 blast at Delhi High Court and the latest blast there—and said Delhi Police is trying hard to crack these. Delhi Police works under direct supervision of the Home Minister. PTI
