New Delhi: An angry mob of villagers on Monday torched a police outpost in Bijuwa under Bhira police station, after a man was allegedly beaten to death by some policemen.
The mob set fire to several motorbikes parked outside the police output.
Policemen at the outpost ran for safety, and the SP reached the spot with more police and PAC reinforcements.
Police had to fire several rounds in the air, after villagers insisted on not handing over the body of the man, who was detained on charge of gambling on Diwali night.
After much persuasion, police managed to take the body for post mortem.
PAC jawans have been deployed in the area to maintain law and order.
SP Lakhimpur Kheri Prashant Kumar said, villagers have alleged that two constables were responsible for the death of the youth.
"The officers have been suspended, and we are arranging compensation for the victim's family", he added.
