Lucknow, Aug 5: Two sub-inspectors of Uttar Pradesh Police have been suspended for robbing a jeweller of his valuables last month on the Faizabad-Gorakhpur highway, an official said Monday.

The robbery took place in Gonda, about 100 km from Lucknow, July 24 when a jeweller was riding his motorcycle to the market.

The two sub-inspectors, under the pretext of checking the papers of his two-wheeler, robbed the jeweller at Parsurampur on the Faizabad-Gorakhpur highway.

The two policemen were in uniform and at work when they robbed the jeweller of valuables worth Rs.60,000. They sped away in a car after the loot.

The jeweller, Lal Bau Soni, brought the matter to the notice of senior police officials and gave them the number of the car in which the two sub-inspectors had fled.

The car was traced and the driver detained.

The driver spilled the beans during interrogation, and stunned investigators when he revealed that two sub-inspectors were behind the crime.

The two have been identified as Kuldeep Tiwari, posted at Kotwali Colonelganj and Dharmendra Yadav, who is still under training as sub-inspector.

Yadav has been arrested and Rs.26,766 of the loot was recovered from him. Tiwari is still at large.

Deputy Inspector General of Police Satyendraveer Singh Sunday suspended the two policemen.
