Kolkata: A group of activists, owing allegiance to Bharat Bachao Sangathan, staged a silent demonstration outside the office of Justice (retd) A K Ganguly, accused of sexually harassing an intern, and demanded his arrest as well as resignation from the post of chairman of West Bengal Human Rights Commission.

The activists staged a silent protest outside Bhabani Bhavan with banners reading "Jurisprudence calls for arrest of Mr Asok Ganguly".

"He should not only step down from the post but should also be arrested immediately in the wake of such serious allegations. He may be reinstated, if he is proven innocent," said a Sangathan member.

They also submitted a letter to his office, saying that since he has been accused in the case and a three-member committee is looking into it, Ganguly should resign from the post to ensure a free and fair trial. They submitted another letter to Governor M K Narayanan, requesting him to ask Ganguly to step down from the post.

Justice Ganguly, however, said he had no intentions of putting in his papers. "I did not face any demonstration when I came in so I would not be able to comment on it. But, I have no intention to resign," he told The Indian Express.

Contacted, Rabindranath Samanta, registrar at WBHRC, said it was a token demonstration. Trinamool Congress leaders had also demanded that Ganguly should step down from the post.

Justice Ganguly has been accused by the law intern of sexually harassing her, a charge denied by him.
