Reciprocity is cardinal principle of diplomatic relations: Shashi Tharoor

New Delhi: Describing "reciprocity as the cardinal principle" of diplomatic relations, Union Minister Shashi Tharoor today said after ill-treatment meted out to Indian Diplomat the government reacted with outrage as the spirit of its approach

He said that in this case Devyani Khobragade was a diplomat serving the nation abroad and not in US for pleasure and has been treated in an unexpectable manner.

"For us not to react would have demoralized our diplomatic representatives around the world who must know that India stands by them when situations arise like this," he added.

"It is important for us to recognize that what happened in this particular incident was an outrageous violations of the standards we would expect any country with which we have friendly relations to treat any of our diplomatic personnel," said Tharoor.

Tharoor expressed hope that no further strict action by India would not be necessary and there will be not be a further detoriation in relationship.

"We did not start this and the onus is on them to re-examine what they have done...to take appropriate measures to defuse the crisis they have started. These signals are very clear and I am sure they have been received loud and clear,"Tharoor said.

Talking about the US response, he said that his government will wait and see and dialogues are going on.

"There is dialogue going on all times. Our foreign secretaries are in daily contact with the Ambassador and counterparts in Washington, our Embassy in Washington is in touch with the state department. There is some real talking going on. We hope for an appropriate response," Tharoor added.
