New Delhi, May 12: Congress general secretary Digivijay Singh has said that Rahul Gandhi will become the prime minister, "when the time comes".

Replying to a volley of questions from Rajat Sharma in the India TV show Aap Ki Adalat, Singh revealed that it was he who opposed Rahul Gandhi's projection as chief ministerial candidate for Uttar Pradesh.

"Maine nischit taur par mana kiya tha (I definitely opposed). Rahul Gandhi does not belong to a state, and it would have been wrong to limit him to a particular state. He belongs to the whole country", said Singh.

Asked whether he would back Rahul for prime ministership, Singh said: "Definitely. He will become when the time comes. In our democratic setup, if people and the party want, he will become the prime minister. Rahul Gandhi was, is and will continue to be our star campaigner."

Singh defended the Congress party's performance in the recently held UP assembly elections, by saying that there was an 8 per cent increase in vote share. "But since our party had a low base, it did not register into seats."

Singh said, an AICC general secretary can only create an atmosphere during elections.

"It depends on the state leadership's ability to gain the people's confidence. Possibly, our state leaders could not match up to the stature of Mulayamji and Mayawati."

The Congress general secretary also blamed the Congress-BSP alliance of 1996, during which 300 seats were given to Mayawati's BSP and the Congress contested 120 seats in UP. "Since then, our party's performance continued to decline."

Digvijay Singh said, he took full credit for "exposing" Baba Ramdev, Anna Hazare and Sri Sri Ravi Shankar. "All of them belong to the RSS camp, and I was proved right."

Singh said: "Baba Ramdev, Anna Hazare and Sri Sri Ravi Shankar were part of the RSS strategy. All credit should go to me for exposing them before the people. They stand exposed before the people"

The Congress general secretary alleged that Ramdev was involved in black money transactions, and the Enforcement Director has already issued him a notice. His aide Balkrishna has been exposed as a Nepali citizen. Each of my charges have been proved correct."

India TV will telecast Digvijay Singh's episode on the Aap Ki Adalat show on Saturday (May 12) at 10 pm and on Sunday (May 13) at 10 am and 10 pm.
