Raipur, May 18: Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi today said that for the party to win the upcoming assembly polls in Chhattisgarh, the senior party leaders need to work in a united manner.

While addressing a Congress training camp here Gandhi said that in 2008, Congress had lost the Chhattisgarh assembly polls not due to the party workers, but due to the senior party leaders “who did not work collectively”.  “If we want Congress to win the upcoming assembly polls, then we need to stay and work together,” he said.

Describing the party workers as party's “backbone”, he said only those partymen, who are working at the grass root level, will be given tickets in the upcoming polls.

“The UPA government has been sending more funds to Chhattisgarh as compared the erstwhile NDA government.  However, due to corruption, it is not reaching the beneficiaries in the state,” the Congress leader said.

Urging youths to come forward to pull down BJP's rule in Chhattisgarh, he said the party workers should go to villages to tell people about the development work being carried out by the UPA government.

Gandhi, who had arrived in Raipur by a plane, attended various programmes and left for Delhi in the evening.  Responding to his visit, Chhattisgarh chief minister Raman Singh said that the people of country had shown their inclination during the Uttar Pradesh assembly polls recently.

Expressing confidence that BJP will get another chance to rule the state, Raman Singh added that the people of Chhattisgarh would turn their back towards Congress.

He added that the funds that the UPA government is releasing for Chhattisgarh is ultimately people's money, which is being used for public works by his government.
