Boganadi (Assam): Protests continued today demanding the arrest and punishment of the culprits who allegedly raped a woman and threw her out of a vehicle leading to her death in Lakhimpur district.

Women's organisations, locals and the All Assam Students Union members staged a two-hour demonstration in front of the Boganadi police station from noon demanding the arrest and punishment of the anti-socials.

Asserting that the 24-hour deadline given on November 25 by the district administration to nab the assailants had elapsed, the protesters demanded that the police should unravel the clues if it was a case of murder or should make a detailed probe to know how such an incident occurred, if it was an accident case.

And if it was a case of rape, the protesters demanded that the culprits be nabbed and “hanged”.

The AASU will hold a candle light vigil in the evening here today demanding justice for the victim.

According to the FIR filed in Boganadi police station, the woman on November 22 had boarded a shared tempo taxi to pick up her six-year old daughter from school at Boginadi area, about 14 km from the district headquarters town of Lakhimpur.

The woman was allegedly raped by the four men inside the tempo before they gorged out her eyes, injured her on the head and neck, the FIR claimed.

The locals saw the men throwing her out of the tempo, about 50 metres away from Boginadi police station on the National Highway following which they informed the police which admitted her to a local hospital.

The woman was later taken to the Gauhati Medical College Hospital where she succumbed to her wounds on November 24 last.
