New Delhi, Jul1:  Hundreds of people residing in unauthorised colonies of South Delhi today protested outside the residence of Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit here demanding basic amenities in their settlements.

The residents of Chattarpur, Ghitorni, Aya Nagar and nearby colonies alleged that no basic amenities had been made available in their areas, although developmental work has started in other unauthorised colonies.

Following the protest, Dikshit assured the protestors that these colonies were being regularised and development work would start soon.

These colonies are among the 1,018 colonies, whose boundaries have been finalised by the government last week.  “Over 1,000 residents from my area have come here to demand basic facilities. They have been waiting for long for development work to start in their areas,” Balram Tanwar, MLA from Chattarpur, who had also come with the protestors said.

The Delhi government has now expedited the process of regularising over 1,000 unauthorised, home to over 40 lakh people.

It had issued provisional regularisation certificates to over 1,200 unauthorised colonies ahead of Assembly polls in 2008.

The then Dikshit government, while distributing the certificates, had promised to regularise the colonies if Congress came to power for the third term.  However, not a single colony has been regularised so far.

The process slowed down considerably last year following allegations that some “non existent” as well as “ineligible” colonies were given provisional regularisation certificates flouting norms.
