New Delhi: Northern Railway today launched a round-the-clock security helpline number, 1322, with an aim to provide speedy assistance to passengers in the event of thefts, harassment, pickpocketing or other criminal incidents on rail premises.

“Passengers can call at 1322 if caught in crime situations like thefts, harassment or any untoward incident at stations or in trains in the Northern zone covering eight states including Uttar Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir and a mechanism has been devised to provide help as soon as possible,” said a senior Northern Railway official.  The call can be made from a landline or mobile number.  Railway Ministry is also working out an all-India security helpline network to make the service available across the country.

The all-India helpline number will also be 1322 as this number has been alloted to railways. But currently the dedicated security helpline will be operational in all 731 stations of the Northern zone covering five divisions - Ambala, Ferozpur, Moradabad, Delhi and Lucknow.  The Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS), the technology arm of railways, is involved in making the software for an all-India helpline network.

The security helpline service will be managed by Railway Protection Force (RPF).

The official said once a passenger calls the helpline, a unique complaint number will be generated and provided to the complainant to be followed for necessary action.  The complainant can also find out the details of the follow-up action by referring the complaint number, he said.  Railways have taken help of all telecom circles of BSNL and service providers pertaining to states such as Punjab, Haryana, UP East, UP West, Jammu and Kashmir and Delhi NCR under the jurisdiction of Northern Railway for activation of the facility.
