New Delhi: In last five years, more than 100 people have died due to cancer in the western region of the Uttar Pradesh and nearly 800 are struggling for life in the second stage of this deadly disease.

Exposure to factory wastage is the main reason why people in this belt of the state are diagnosed with cancer especially liver and stomach cancer. Toxic elements, mercury and other poisonous waste items coming out from factory are mixed with the groundwater.

The low level of water in Hindon river and presence of chemicals in sewerage are also the other reasons.

Senior scientist of ICPO, Dr MA Khan, said that in Greater Noida, cancer has been found in neck and breast of people. The health department is currently doing a survey in to identify patients at high risk for cancer.

A Greater Noida based NGA has sought the list of legal and illegal factories from the government functioning in the region.

There are nearly 150 villages between Greater Noida and Bagpat and most of the village face higher risk of the disease.

Children also face threat from cancer in the region. Four months ago, a four year old infant lost battle to cancer.
