Know Indians who are CEOs of major global corporations

New Delhi: With Satya Nadella becoming CEO at software firm Microsoft, 13 Indian origin persons holding top posts at global corporations manage businesses worth about $350 billion. Nadella, the Hyderabad-born cricket loving, engineering executive, who has been with Microsoft for over 20 years, has joined the league of Indra Nooyi, Lakshmi Mittal, Anshu Jain and Ivan Menzes, among many other Indian-origin persons at the helm at large conglomerates headquartered abroad. International magazine Time once termed CEOs as India's leading "export" and said that the subcontinent could be "the ideal training ground for global bosses". The big conglomerations include Microsoft, PepsiCo, ArcelorMittal, Deutsche Bank, Diageo, Reckitt Benckiser (Rakesh Kapoor), MasterCard (Ajay Banga), DBS Group Holdings (Piyush Gupta), SanDisk (Sanjay Mehrotra), Global Foudries (Sanjay Jha) and Adobe (Shantanu Narayen). There are 13 Indians who are today CEOs of major global corporations. As many as four of these 13 are alumni of St Stephen's College in Delhi, three of those four are also from IIM, Ahmedabad. With another of these CEOs being an alumnus of Delhi University's Sri Ram College of Commerce and DPS, Mathura Road, and at least one other having done his schooling from Modern School. The four St Stephen's alumni are Ivan Menezes of Diageo, the alcoholic beverages firm, Mastercard's Ajay Banga, financial services giant DBS Group's Piyush Gupta and Vasudeva. Apart from Vasudeva, the others went on to do an MBA from IIM, Ahmedabad. Anshu Jain, who heads Deutsche Bank, got his bachelor's degree from SRCC after finishing his schooling from DPS Mathura Road, while Rakesh Kapoor, who heads Reckitt Benckiser, studied at Modern School. Apart from St Stephen's and IIM(A), no other college or institute in India figures more than once on the list. IIM, Calcutta figures once, with Pepsico chief Indra Nooyi being an alumnus, IIT Kharagpur as the alma mater of Berkshire Hathaway boss Ajit Jain and IIT Roorkee in the biodata of Dinesh Paliwal, who heads Harman International, a firm that manufactures audio equipment for homes and automobiles. Osmania University, Madras Christian College, BITS Pilani, XLRI Jamshedpur and Manipal Institute of Technology all figure once each, with some of these corporate leaders having studied in more than one higher educational institution in India. Among foreign institutions, the University of California, Berkeley is the only one that crops up more than once with Adobe chief Shantanu Narayen and SanDisk boss Sanjay Mehrotra both having studied there. Details of where they did their schooling were not available for several of these CEOs, but among those for whom they are available, Hyderabad Public School is the only one that figures twice, as the alma mater of Nadella and Narayen.
