Patna: Former President APJ Abdul Kalam yesterday called for harnessing available water and its proper management for the economic development of Bihar.

“We have to harness the available water and manage it properly for irrigation so that the state becomes a granary of India,” Kalam told students of the National Institute of Technology at its third convocation here.

The water resources could also be used for electricity and inland water transport, he said.

Flood water of rivers like Ganga and Koshi could be conserved through innovative technology and proper flood control management for its use later for various purposes, Kalam said.

The rivers coming from the North-East could be included in the Inter-Linking of Rivers programme, Kalam said and added that the flood water could also be managed by recovering all water bodies from encroachments using satellite maps.
