New Delhi: Denouncing violence during the parliamentary elections in Bangladesh, India today said the polls were a constitutional requirement and the democratic processes must be allowed to take their own course in the country.

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's Awami League is set to form the next government after securing over three-fourth majority in the controversial polls marred by deadly clashes, a low turnout and a boycott by opposition parties.

“Elections in Bangladesh on January 5 were a constitutional requirement. They are a part of the internal and constitutional process of Bangladesh. It is for the people of Bangladesh to decide their own future and choose their representatives in a manner that responds to their aspirations,” the Spokesperson in the Ministry of External Affairs said.

“Violence cannot and should not determine the way forward. The democratic processes must be allowed to take their own course in Bangladesh,” he said.
