New Delhi: Providing quality public health facilities is on the top of the agenda of Narendra Modi government.

Acting at the behest pf the Prime Minister, Union Health Minister Harsh Vrdhan along with top officials are working on series of reforms in this regard. Recently, Vardhan had said that Narendra Modi wanted to do extraordinary work in the health sector. Vardhan is also visiting several hospitals including AIIMS in different cities to take a stock of services being provided to common people.

Establishing top medical institutes like AIIMS and improving current situation reflect in government's attitude while dealing with this sector.

Besides modernizing and upgrading technologies and infrastructures in government hospitals, Modi's health reforms include deployment of health workers, setting up of health knowledge institutes in all districts, functioning in coordination with upgraded district hospitals and a three-year B.Sc course in community health.

The Prime Minister will be chairing a meeting this week to discuss the format of the health insurance for all, setting up medical colleges in each district and a three-year BSc course.

Highly placed sources said that the Prime Minister has asked the Planning Commission Secretary Sindhushree Kullar to make a presentation on the reforms.

To meet the growing demand, the government wants to set up a medical college in each district with the help of state governments in coordination with the upgraded district hospitals.

It should be noted that the President Pranab Mukherjee, while highlighting the top agendas of the NDA government had said ‘to achieve a holistic healthcare system, the government would formulate a new Health Policy and National Health Assurance Mission, besides promoting yoga in AYUSH and establishment of AIIMS like institutions in all states'.

The Bharatiya Janata party (BJP) had in its manifesto for the Lok Sabha polls announced National Health Assurance Mission with a motto to provide accessible and affordable healthcare to the citizens.

At present, there are just 0.64 doctors and 1.44 nurses for 1,000 citizens.
