Kolkata:   A man died of acute Encephalitis at the North Bengal Medical College (NBMC) Hospital here, taking the total number of deaths in the state since January to 21, a senior official of the Health Department said today.

A middle-aged man, who was suffering from the disease for last of couple of weeks, died late last night at the NBMC, the official said.

Out of the 21 deaths, 14 were due to acute Encephalitis and seven due to Japanese Encephalitis, he added.

Stating that there was "nothing to panic" about the disease, the health officer said the state government this year has taken all necessary precautionary measures to control it.

"There is nothing to panic about the disease in the state. We have taken every measure to control it this year," he said, adding this year so far there were no reports of any Encephalitis patient from the city.

Incidentally, last year over 200 deaths due to different types of encephalitis were recorded in the state.
