New Delhi: CBI chief Ranjit Sinha's epic blunder has inflamed the social media at a time the nation's rape debate has been dominated by calls for sweeping changes not just in laws but in mindsets.

Former IPS officer Kiran Bedi commented that the CBI director should issue a public apology.

"The CBI director asks women to enjoy rape. Even a hardcore misogynist culprit would think twice before saying it," tweeted Taslima Nasreen.

“Shameful comment on rape by CBI chief, as a woman absolutely appalled and expect/hope that some action will be taken,”

CBI today clarified:"The statement was made in the context of the voice vote taken by Shekhar Gupta , editor and writer on legalising betting in sports. After the opinion of R N Savani and Rahul Dravid , I gave my opinion that betting should be legalised and that if the laws cannot be enforced that does not mean that laws should not be made. This is as erroneous as saying that if rape is inevitable one should lie back and enjoy it. Laws should be strictly enforced and absence of enforcement or lack of will for enforcement does not mean that laws should not be made. I reiterate my deep sense of regard and respect for women and my commitment for gender issues."
