BHU students demand CBI probe into youth's murder case, hold candle march

Banaras Hindu University demand justice for the student killed at the campus

Banaras Hindu University students took out a candle march to demand a CBI probe into student Gaurav Singh's death, who was shot dead at the campus last week. The students showed up in the march near BHU, holding placards that read - "We want justice for Gaurav Singh" and "We demand CBI probe."

On April 2, unidentified bike-borne assailants had fired at Gaurav outside a hostel. He was rushed to the trauma center of the BHU's Institute of Medical Sciences, where he succumbed to injuries.

Rajesh Singh, BHU public relations officer had earlier said Gaurav Singh and some other students were suspended from the university. They were allegedly a part of a violent protest in 2017, which was held at the campus, over harassment of some students.

According to Gaurav's father, Rakesh Singh, who also works as a clerk in the university, his son was pursuing a master of computer applications. He alleged that BHU administration had "stooped so low" that it was denying that Gaurav was a student even after his death. he has filed an FIR against five identified, including the BHU chief proctor, and two unidentified persons. 

BHU student leader and a member of the Samajwadi Party students' wing, Ashutosh Singh has also claimed that he was also targeted but escaped unhurt miraculously. He said the killing was part of a "larger conspiracy hatched by some of the local politicians, contractors working in BHU, along with some professors of the varsity".

Police have so far arrested three students Ashutosh Tripathi, Kumar Mangalam, and Rupesh Tiwari, of the BHU's Birla hostel in connection with the case and recovered a countrymade pistol from their possession. They have confessed that their rivalry with Gaurav Singh.
