New Delhi: The Mumbai Police have summoned filmmaker Karan Johar to record his statement in a case regarding the controversial All India Bakchod (AIB) roast held last year.

The show was hosted in December 2013 in Worli, Mumbai, by the comedy group AIB. Post the show, an FIR was filed against actors Ranveer Singh, Arjun Kapoor, Deepika Padukone and others for using obscene language.

The show was inspired by US celebrity roasts, in which a celebrity is mocked. Karan Johar played the role of a ‘roastmaster' in it. Many renowned personalities of Bollywood including Anurag Kahsyap, Deepika Padukone, Alia Bhatt, Sonakshi Sinha, Sanjay Kapoor and Hiroo Johar were spectators.

The AIB Roast was put online a month later but ran into controversy when social Santosh Daundkar approached a city court in February 2014, calling the content of the roast ‘vulgar'. The court then ordered the police to register an FIR and submit an investigation report.

“We have summoned Karan Johar, which essentially means he will have to come to the Tardeo police station to give his statement. His statement will be an important part of the charge sheet that is yet to be submitted to the court,” an officer from Tardeo police station told a leading daily.

Karan is currently in London shooting for his upcoming flick ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil'. After Karan records his statement, summons are likely to be sent to Deepika, Ranveer and Arjun as well.
