New Delhi: Nishi Vasudeva created history Saturday, becoming the first woman to head a Navaratna public sector undertaking - the Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL).

She succeeds Subir Roy Choudhury as the chairman and managing director, who demitted office Friday on attaining superannuation.

The state-run oil marketing company has “Navaratna” status, that allows its board to make investments of up to Rs.1,000 crore without seeking government permission.

Vasudeva, who in 2011 was the first woman to join the board of HPCL, is also vice president, youth and gender, World Petroleum Council, the company said in a statement here.

Vasudeva, an MBA from the Indian Institute of Management, Kolkata, has wide experience in the petroleum industry spanning over 36 years in diverse functions including corporate strategy and planning, marketing and information systems.
