Nitish Kumar to take Rajya Sabha oath on April 10, new Bihar govt likely after April 14: Sources

JDU chief and Bihar CM Nitish Kumar will take the oath as a member of the Rajya Sabha on April 10. Other members are also scheduled to take oaths on the same day, sources said on Thursday. For this purpose, Nitish Kumar will depart for Delhi on April 9. It is believed that a new government will be formed in Bihar after April 14.

Nitish Kumar to continue to get Z+ security

Earlier in the day, the Bihar Home Department issued orders saying that Nitish Kumar will continue to receive ‘Z Plus’ category security even after stepping down as Chief Minister of Bihar. The order, issued by the Special Branch, stated that his security cover will remain intact upon assuming office as a Rajya Sabha member.

The order was issued after a review of his security requirements under the provisions of the Bihar Special Security Act, 2000. As per the order, the Director General of Police and the Special Branch have been instructed to ensure the highest level of protection.

It should be noted that the ‘Z Plus’ category is the highest tier of security cover in India which reserved for top dignitaries such as the Prime Minister, the President, and senior political leaders.

The security cover is a multi-layered security arrangement with around 55 personnel, including Personal Security Officers (PSOs), armed guards, escort vehicles, and round-the-clock surveillance.

It should be recalled that Nitish Kumar was elected to the Rajya Sabha on March 16 and later he resigned from the Bihar Legislative Council on March 30. His entry into the Upper House is expected to mark a significant political transition in the state.

Nitish Kumar resigned from membership in Bihar Legislative Council

Nitish Kumar, who was elected to the Rajya Sabha earlier this month, resigned from his membership in the Bihar Legislative Council . Following JDU national president Nitish Kumar's decision to resign from the Bihar Legislative Council, speculation has intensified regarding the state's new Chief Minister.

Close associates of Nitish Kumar have been indicating for some time, citing constitutional provisions that allow a person to remain in the position of Chief Minister for up to six months even after ceasing to be a member of the Legislative Assembly or Legislative Council.
