In Gonda, Uttar Pradesh, the driver of an SUV involved in a road accident that resulted in the deaths of two cousins and injury of a woman was arrested on Wednesday. The incident involved an SUV allegedly part of the convoy of BJP's Kaiserganj candidate, Karan Bhushan Singh. Station House Officer (SHO) Kernalganj, Nirbhay Narayan Singh, reported that Rehan Khan (17) and Shehzad Khan (20) were on a motorcycle when they were struck by the SUV near a school. Both cousins died on the spot. The driver lost control and also hit Sita Devi (60), who was walking on the roadside.

Driver arrested

The driver, Lav Kush Srivastava, has been arrested, and his vehicle has been seized. An FIR has been registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Motor Vehicles Act. The bodies were handed over to the deceased's families after completing formalities. Sita Devi is currently receiving treatment at a medical college.

Meanwhile. Karan Bhushan Singh addressed the tragic road accident involving his convoy that resulted in the deaths of two cousins and the injury of a woman. Singh explained that he was en route to an event in Bahraich when the accident occurred. The SUV, which was the last vehicle in his convoy, was involved in the incident.

Singh’s statement

Singh described the sequence of events: "A woman was trying to cross the road from the right side, and the two children (deceased) collided with her first and then fell on the left side of the road when one of my cars ran over them... The children were quite young." He emphasized that at the time of the accident, he had already reached the event venue.

Response and assistance

Upon receiving information about the accident, Singh immediately dispatched his car to take the victims to the hospital. He expressed his condolences and support to the victims' families, stating, "I want to tell the family of the deceased that we will try our best to be there with you in sickness and in health and do whatever I can to the best of my abilities."

Convoy details

There were four vehicles in Karan Bhushan Singh’s convoy, with the SUV that caused the accident trailing the convoy. A police officer revealed that the convoy’s speed exceeded 100 kmph. The SUV’s impact was so severe that it damaged over a dozen cement poles along the road and got entangled in barbed wire, puncturing one of its tires. The SUV had been fined previously for traffic violations.

Family’s grief

Relatives of the deceased expressed their grief. Naushad, a relative of Rehan, mentioned that Rehan was unwell and heading to Colonelganj with Shehzad for treatment. Salman, another relative, described arriving at the accident scene to find blood on the road and the SUV involved in the crash. Both Rehan and Shehzad were only children to their parents.

Police presence and investigation

Police have deployed personnel in the area to maintain law and order. The Union Minister of Earth Sciences flagged the error, questioning the plausibility of the reported temperature. The IMD assured a review of the data, suggesting a potential sensor error or local anomaly. Meanwhile, the incident has ignited discussions on administrative oversights and the necessity for precise and reliable data dissemination.
