UP Budget News: The Uttar Pradesh government has proposed an allocation of ₹200 crore for the Gorakhpur Industrial Corridor during the 2023-24 state assembly budget session. The industrial township will be located near the Gorakhpur Link Expressway and is expected to provide significant employment opportunities for the southern Gorakhpur region, which is currently identified as a backward area. The proposed budget assumes significance in light of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, slated for April-May 2024, with Uttar Pradesh being the country's most populous state, sending 80 members to the lower house of Parliament.

State government officials have stated that the industrial development in Gorakhpur will transform the region into a 'Greater GIDA' and attract investors, who have shown interest in the area over the last five years. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had previously instructed the initiation of land acquisition for the project. The budget is second for 'Yogi 2.0,' under whose leadership the ruling BJP was re-elected in March last year.

The budget has been described as 'inclusive' by Deputy CM Brijesh Pathak, aimed at the overall development of the state. The budget session began on February 20, amidst protests by the SP-led opposition over various issues. In the 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP won 71 and 62 seats respectively from Uttar Pradesh and crossed the majority mark on its own, with the upcoming elections in 2024 being significant for the BJP, led by PM Narendra Modi, as they seek their third term at the Centre.
