On Independence Day, the temperature in Anchorage soared higher than at any other time on record as a massive heat dome sprawled over the state. The city’s high temperature of 90 degrees topped its previous record by an astounding five degrees.
The magnitude-7.0 earthquake sent residents scurrying for cover when it hit about 8.30 a.m. on Friday. The quake was centred 10 miles northeast of Anchorage, the state's largest city with a population of about 300,000.
No tsunami arrived and there were no immediate reports of deaths or serious injuries.
According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake measuring 8.2 on the Richter scale struck some 300 km south-east of Kodiak at a depth of 10 km at 09:31 GMT.
