For the second week in a row, Alexander Isak is out of the Newcastle squad in the Premier League. The Swedish forward scored 23 goals in the league last season and finished as the second-leading goal scorer. However, things changed drastically in Newcastle as soon after the season ended, Isak handed in a transfer request to the management. It came as a shock to many, given that the forward had a stellar season at St James’ Park last season.
Meanwhile, he was once again out of the squad that plays Liverpool in gameweek 2 of the Premier League. The Magpies started the season with a goalless draw against Aston Villa, and maybe, with Isak in front, things could have been different. However, in his absence, the Eddie Howe side named Anthony Gordon in the middle.
They have tried to sign Isak’s replacement throughout the summer, as Hugo Ekitike was one of their key targets. However, Liverpool were quick to act on it as the France international has been very impressive in the limited time he has featured. He will be key for the Merseyside club against the Magpies as the latter is known for their rock-solid defence.
On the other hand, Liverpool are reported to be interested in signing Isak in the coming days. The Arne Slot-led management is expected to propose a deal before the window closes in a week.
Liverpool, in the meantime, have once again named Andy Robertson in the subs list with Kerkez starting in the left-back position. The focus will be on Florian Writz, who failed to impress on his Premier League debut for Liverpool in the opening week against Bournemouth.
