Dhaka, Bangladesh: Captain Angelo Mathews led from the front, claiming 3-21, while Thisara Perera hit a career-best 80 not out to help Sri Lanka beat Bangladesh by 13 runs in the first one-day international at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on Monday.

Bangladesh was bowled out for 167 in response to Sri Lanka's 180.

Mathews' contribution was crucial, taking the wicket of opposite number Mushfiqur Rahim to turn the tables on Bangladesh after Shamsur Rahman and Mominul Haque seemed to have put the side in a comfortable position.

After Lasith Malinga had Anamul Haque in the second ball of the innings, Rahman scored 62, hitting five fours and three sixes, while Mominul Haque hit 44 off 53 balls with seven fours. The pair added 79 runs.

Sri Lankan fielders showed an electrifying fielding effort to run out Shamsur Rahman and Shakib Al Hasan, putting Bangladesh in trouble.

Senanayeke then dealt a double blow, removing Nasir Hossain and Mahmudullah in consecutive deliveries.

Senanayeke ended with 2-33 while Lasith Malinga and Thisara Perera took one wicket apiece.

Earlier, Thisara Perera's 80 not out helped Sri Lanka recover from a precarious 67-8. He and Senanayeke put on 82 for the ninth wicket, saving his side from the prospect of being all out for less than 100. Senanayeke scored 30.

Perera, who also masterminded the team's close victory in the Twenty20 series, survived three times. He was dropped by Sohag Gazi on 7 off Arafat Sunny and by Nasir Hossain off Gazi on 30. On both occasion the fielders failed to hold on the catch and it crossed the boundary line to gift him a six. On 76, he was dropped by Shakib Al Hasan off Al-Amin Hossain.

It was Perera's third half-century in ODI cricket.

Opener Kusal Perera made 20 while Dinesh Chandimal contributed 13. The rest of the batsmen failed to reach double digits in the face of sustained pressure from the Bangladeshi bowlers.

Shakib Al Hasan, debutant Arafat Sunny and Rubel Hossain picked up two wickets apiece for Bangladesh.
