Pakistan has achieved the dubious distinction of becoming the first full-member ICC nation to go winless in a home tournament. They also set another unwanted record by becoming only the second team, after Australia, to fail to register a single win in a tournament after winning it in the previous edition, with Australia doing so in 2013 after winning in 2009, and Pakistan repeating the feat in 2025 after their 2017 triumph.
When it comes to home tournaments, Scotland were the first team to register zero wins in the 1999 ODI World Cup. In the following year, Kenya joined them by going winless in the Champions Trophy. However, none of them were ful-member nation of the ICC.
Notably, Pakistan lost their opening two games against New Zealand and India, while their third game against Bangladesh was called off due to rain. With that, Pakistan created embarrassing records and finished at the bottom of the points table, while Bangladesh ended in the third spot. India and New Zealand are the two teams that qualified for the semi-finals from Group A.
Pakistan will next travel to New Zealand for a white-ball tour. A new coach is expected to be announced after Aaqib Javed’s contract is set to end. A source close to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) told PTI that the officials are in discussion but nothing has been decided so far. It is also possible that another interim coach will be hired until the management finalises someone.
Aaqib meanwhile blamed the experience of the cricketers for their early exit from the Champions Trophy. He noted that the Indian cricketers have played almost 1500 matches as a unit, while it’s only 400 for Pakistan. He added that Babar Azam is the senior-most cricketer in the team but in comparison to Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, he has played a lot fewer matches.
