Sherfane Rutherford will turn up for five-time champions Mumbai Indians in the next edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Gujarat Titans traded him to the said franchise today, and IPL confirmed the development on its official website as well. The Titans had bought the West Indies all-rounder for Rs 2.6 crore, and the all-cash deal will see him earn the same amount while playing for MI.
Interestingly, Rutherford was with the Mumbai Indians in 2020 as well, but didn't get a single chance as they won the tournament for the record-extending fifth time without much fuss. He played the role of a finisher for the Titans last season, scoring 291 runs in 11 innings at a strike rate of 157.29 and an average of 32.33.
Mumbai Indians will be his fourth team in the IPL, having played for Delhi Capitals and Royal Challengers Bengaluru apart from GT. Overall, Rutherford has played 23 matches in the cash-rich league and scored 397 runs at a strike rate of 137.37, hitting 26 sixes and 25 fours.
Sherfane Rutherford has played 44 T20Is for West Indies
Rutherford has played 44 T20Is for the West Indies so far, scoring 588 runs at a strike rate of 137.38 with three half-centuries. Overall, he has played for 15 teams in the T20 circuit and has experience of playing 221 T20 matches, amassing 3612 runs at a strike rate of almost 137 with 14 fifties to his credit as Mumbai Indians are expecting his explosive batting to come to the fore.
"The Southpaw’s explosive batting style & ability to contribute crucial quick-fire cameos, coupled with his versatility as a right-arm fast-medium bowler, make him a valuable option for balance and firepower in the squad, making him the perfect fit for our brand of cricket," Mumbai Indians wrote on its official website welcoming the Caribbean all-rounder to the team.
