Lucknow, Dec 20: Terming the ongoing war of words between the Centre and Mayawati over proposed division of the state as nothing but a farce, BJP in Uttar Pradesh today dared the ruling BSP to withdraw its unconditional support to UPA if the party was really opposed to its policies.
Accusing BSP and Congress of indulging in dramatics to divert people's attention from real issues, state BJP spokesman Vijay Bahadur Pathak said, “The war of words between the Centre and the state is nothing more than a farce and is only an attempt to distract the attention of people.”
The Centre yesterday returned to Uttar Pradesh the Assembly resolution for division of poll-bound UP into four smaller states evoking a sharp reaction from Mayawati who alleged that the Central government wanted to keep the issue pending and its letter sent to the state in this regard was against constitutional norms.
Alleging that both the Centre and the state are indulging in letter politics, Pathak said, “Mayawati's attack on the Centre on the issue of partition of UP is barely an effort to distract the attention of the people.”
“If Mayawati was opposed to the policies of the Centre, BSP should withdraw its unconditional support to the UPA government,” he said.
BJP in principle is in favour of smaller states, but first a state reorganisation commission should be set up to examine the matter, he said.
He alleged that the manner in which government got the proposal regarding division of UP in four parts passed in the state assembly indicated that it was not serious on the issue and using it only as a poll plank.
Samajwadi Party alleged that immaturity and arbitrary attitude of the CM was clear from her proposal for division of the state.
“The Centre has raised several questions over the proposal passed by the house amidst din and sent it back to the state government,” SP spokesman Rajendra Chaudhary said.
He alleged that despite this in favour of her improper proposal the CM called a press conference and made her own administration irresponsible.
“A football match is being played between the Centre and the state to cheat the people of the state,” he alleged.
