LS win not a mere five-year contract, says Modi

Varanasi: A huge swarm of BJP supporters and city-dwellers greeted Prime Minister-elect Narendra Modi on his visit here on Saturday evening and cheered him as his cavalcade moved from the airport to the Kashi Vishwanath

After performing 'Ganga poojan', Modi and his party colleagues took their places on a specially-erected stage on the banks of the river and were joined by a number of newly-elected BJP MPs from nearby constituencies.

He spent close to an hour watching the exquisitely choreographed ritual of 'Ganga aarti', performed by students of Sanskrit schools, and listening to the singing of hymns with rapt attention, often clapping in appreciation.

After delivering his address, which lasted for about half-an-hour, Modi flew back to Delhi.

He promised the people of Kashi that he will have a lasting relationship with them, adding that he did not view his electoral victory from here as "a mere five-year contract".

"We will work together to transform Kashi, which is essential to transform India," Modi said in parting, evoking a huge round of applause from the people who had gathered at the Ghat, some of whom had travelled several miles on foot and spent several hours waiting in the hot and humid weather for the BJP leader.
