Ahmedabad : The brother of Sohrabuddin Sheikh has sent a legal notice to Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi over his remarks that Congress has given 'supari' (contract) to CBI to politically finish him, saying it amounted to contempt of the Supreme Court.

"My client Rubabuddin Sheikh has sent a legal notice to Chief Minister Narendra Modi on his remarks about Congress giving supari to CBI to (politically) finish his," advocate Mukul Sinha said here on Wwednesday.

"Modi's statement is a contempt of the Supreme Court on whose direction CBI is investigating the fake encounter of Sohrabuddin and murder of his wife Kausar Bi," Sinha said, quoting from the notice.

The notice has also said that by making such a statement, the BJP leader is trying to mislead the people of Gujarat, and make them believe that CBI was investigating the case with ulterior motives.

In a speech here on August 25, Modi had said that "Congress cannot digest the progress made by Gujarat and that is the reason they have given 'supari' to CBI to finish Modi and stop the progress of state".

Modi has been given one week to reply to the legal notice, Rubabuddin's lawyer said.  Sohrabuddin, a gangster, was killed in a staged shootout by Gujarat and Rajasthan Police in November 2005.

CBI has arrested former Gujarat minister Amit Shah in the case, in which several policemen are also behind bars. PTI
