New Delhi: Former Delhi law minister Jitender Singh Tomar, arrested in connection with fake degree case, has two suspected pickpockets for company in Tihar Jail.

On Sunday, he was sent to judicial custody for one day after his 12-day police remand ended.

Tomar was produced in the court by the police on the expiry of his two-day police remand. He has been in police custody since his arrest on June 9 with the court extending his police remand period thrice.

"In the circumstances, Investigating Officer (IO) submits that the accused be sent to one day judicial custody as his presence is required for taking specimen signatures in connection with the case. Accused is granted one day judicial custody," Metropolitan Magistrate Ankit Singla said.

During the hearing, Tomar had moved an application to the court urging to be housed in a separate cell as he was apprehensive of spending time with notorious criminals in the jail.

Reports say that only cell number 8, meant for first-time offenders, was on offer for Tomar. Hindustan Times reported that the duo keeping him company in the jail cell were reportedly excited to have a former minister under the same roof.

"When the inmates got the news about Tomar, they were excited. They inquired if Tomar will dine with them at night and sleep under the same roof. The two were excited about Tomar staying with them and asked if he will be there for at least two weeks," sources were quoted as saying in the report.

Tomar reached the jail around 6.30pm and was straight taken to the cell.

Meanwhile, a Delhi court will today hear the bail plea of former Delhi law minister.

Tomar, Aam Aadmi Party MLA from Trinagar in Delhi, was arrested in the morning of June 9 following an investigation into the complaint by Bar Council of Delhi that he had obtained a fake law degree from a Bihar college.

An FIR was registered against Tomar on June 8 at Hauz Khas police station and he was booked for offences of cheating, forgery, using forged documents as genuine, forgery with intent to cheat and criminal conspiracy.

During his 12-day police custody period, the AAP MLA was taken to various places in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar to ascertain facts regarding his alleged fake B.Sc and LLB degrees.
