Patna: Bachcha Rai, director-cum-principal of VR College in Vaishali district, accused in the Class 12 examination scam, surrendered before the police today.

Former Bihar School Examination Board Chairman Lalkeshwar Prasad Singh, however, is still absconding.

Patna Senior Superintendent of Police Manu Maharaj, who is heading the SIT, had earlier told India TV that Lalkeshwar and Bachcha will be arrested soon.

Lalu Prasad Yadav’s close aide Baccha Rai used to demand a huge amount of money from students to top the exams. The rate list which was managed by him started from – Rs 80,000 to top the exam, Rs 50,000 for good score, Rs 10,000 for first division, Rs 8,000 to pass and Rs 15,000 for providing proxy writers.

Earlier, a FIR was registered against four students and the director of the college in connection with Bihar School Examination Board (BSEB) results issue. The four students against whom the case has been registered are Sourabh Shrestha, Rahul Kumar, Ruby Rai and Shalini.

Following the furore over the Bihar Board examination toppers being unable to answer basic questions related to their stream eventually leading to a re-examination, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar last week said the guilty won't be spared, adding the investigation into this matter will be done with a criminal angle.

The SIT had on Thursday arrested five persons in connection with the state board exams scam.

The BSEB on June 4 cancelled the results of two toppers, including Sourabh Shrestha, of the Intermediate (Science) examinations after they failed to prove their merits in a re-test.
