Two days after he was replaced by Sangrur MP Bhagwant Mann as the convenor of Aam Aadmi Party's Punjab unit, Gurpreet Singh 'Ghuggi' today tendered his resignation from the primary membership of the party, dealing another blow to the outfit that is already reeling under a string of allegations and rebellion.
Mann was appointed as the chief of AAP’s Punjab unit on May 8 at a meeting of the AAP Political Affairs Committee (PAC) in New Delhi.
The move came nearly two months after the Punjab Assembly polls results where Kejriwal-led party had won 20 out of 117 seats.
Expressing displeasure over the process of Bhagwant Mann's appointment as the new state unit chief.
He said the entire election process of appointing the new state chief was "fake and unfair" and said the party adopted a "pick and choose policy" while inviting members for the election to the post.
Announcing his resignation at a press conference, Ghuggi said the party has deviated from its principles.
"...I'm resigning from the primary membership with a heavy heart. For Punjab, Punjabiyat whatever needs to be done, I will do that, but this party has deviated from its principles and it has become difficult for me to continue with this party," Ghuggi told reporters here.
He was made the state convenor in September 2016, replacing Sucha Singh Chhotepur who was sacked from the post on the charge of allegedly accepting money from a party volunteer.
Ghuggi had earlier questioned the "urgency" of appointing Mann as the new Punjab president and also questioned under "what pressure" the decision was taken.
Ghuggi said that since the allegations against the Delhi CM are serious and have been levelled by a former cabinet minister, the party workers expect a statement from the AAP chief.
