Former West Indies all-rounder Andre Russell announced his retirement from IPL after being released by the Kolkata Knight Riders ahead of the 2026 player auction. Russell’s decision meant that one of the greatest IPL careers came to an end and even though the 37-year-old won’t be seen playing in the cash-rich league anymore, the hard-hitting all-rounder will be part of KKR’s support staff from the next season onwards.

Russell was the lifeblood of the KKR line-up for 12 seasons, starting in 2014 when he was picked by the franchise for the first time in the mega auction. In total, Russell played 133 matches out of 140 in his IPL career for the Knight Riders and nearly all of his achievements in the tournament have been in Purple and Gold.

In 133 matches for KKR in IPL, Russell has amassed 2,593 runs in 111 innings, averaging 28.81, while striking at 174.96. With the ball, Russell took 122 wickets in the IPL wearing purple and even though he has played for the then Delhi Daredevils in the past, he mentioned that he couldn't imagine himself in any other jersey.

Overall, Russell has 2,651 runs to his name in the IPL in 140 matches, while taking 123 wickets with the ball, just one for the Delhi franchise across seven matches in 2012 and 2013. Russell also has a five-wicket haul against his name in the IPL in the 2021 edition against the Mumbai Indians.

IPL will miss Russell and his big sixes, since he has hit 223 of them in the tournament and the impact he has had on the games when he was on song. Teams that had him on the radar would be disappointed with the announcement but KKR will be hoping that the big man can have as much impact and effect as part of the support staff as he had on the field.
