Tokyo, Jul 13: A record-level of rainfall continued to pound the Kyushu area in southern Japan on Friday, causing landslides and floods.

Local media reported that the death toll rose to 19 on Friday morning, with at least 8 people missing.

The Meteorological Agency has issued heavy rain and landslide warnings across large parts of southern Japan.

Thousands of people have been evacuated, while rescuers continue to search for missing people in the hardest hit Kumamoto and Oita prefectures.

Hundreds of homes were destroyed or damaged, and tens of thousands of people had to evacuate the area, which is threatened by swollen rivers and more mudslides.

The Meteorological Agency said the heavy rains and thunderstorms are expected to continue through Friday evening.
