Mount Etna, Sicily, Feb 10: Italy's Mount Etna spewed forth lava overnight on Wednesday into Thursday with bursts lighting up the night sky.

Officials closed the airport in the nearby town of Catania.

The Roma football team had to spend the night at a hotel in Catania after their private flight was cancelled due to the eruptions.

Mount Etna - at more than 3-thousand metres (9,842 feet) high - is the largest active volcano in Europe.
