China has strongly rebuked the United States after the latter’s military strike on Venezuela’s capital Caracas. Beijing warned Washington not to put pressure on or intervene in other South American nations, saying no country should see itself as the “world’s police or judge”.
Speaking at a press briefing on Tuesday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said China opposes actions that violate international rules, stressing that every country has the right to choose its own path of development without outside interference.
Mao said China believes all nations should follow international law and respect the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter. She added that Beijing supports the idea of common, comprehensive, cooperative and sustainable security for all countries.
She also said China respects the sovereignty and territorial integrity of every nation.
"China believes that all countries should respect the development paths chosen by the people of other countries and abide by international law and the purposes and principles of the UN Charter. Major countries, in particular, should set a good example. No country should act as the world's police or judge," Mao said.
"China champions the vision of common, comprehensive, cooperative and sustainable security, respects all countries' sovereignty and territorial integrity, takes other countries' legitimate security concerns seriously, and supports resolving differences and disputes peacefully through dialogue and consultation. This is China's solution for global security challenges and towards universal and common security," she added.
Mao said China was ready to work with other countries for world peace and stability.
"China stands ready to work with other countries to defend the authority of international law, reject the law of the jungle, oppose interference in countries' internal affairs and jointly uphold world peace and stability," she said.
US strikes Venezuela
Amid rapidly rising diplomatic tensions, the United States on Saturday launched multiple strikes in Venezuela. The operation allegedly resulted in the capture of President Nicolas Maduro and First Lady Cilia Flores by US Delta Force, after which they were transported to New York.
