New Delhi: Renkoji is a Buddhist temple located in the Suginami Ward of tokyo, Japan's capital Nestled in the wada part of the Suginami Ward, it is a small but beautiful temple. If you are in the Tokyo area this temple can be easily reached by taking the Tokyo Metro to the Higashi-Koenji Station.Inspired by the God of Wealth and Happiness this small, well-preserved temple was established in 1594. It belongs to the Nichiren sect of Buddhism that believes that human salvation lies only in the Lotus Sutra. Apart from being one of the unique temples belonging to the Nichiren sect, Renkoji Temple is assumed to be the purported location of the ashes of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, Indian freedom-fighter, which have been preserved since September 18, 1945. Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose led the Indian National Army (Azad Hind Fauj) against the British rulers. The INA, with the help of Japanese army marched through South-east Asia, and Myanmar, till the Manipur border, where it lost the final battle against the British. Netaji died in a plane crash in Taipei soon after World War II, but this fact is still being contested by his supporters in India.Some say, he was taken prisoner in Russia or China, while some say he was sent to exile. Nothing has been proved comclusively so far. Netaji's ashes came to the Renkoji temple for the purpose of a funeral ceremony but the father of the present chief monk, Rev. Mochizuki,agreed to keep them in safe custody.Bose's funeral was held at 8:00 p.m. on September 18, 1945. On August 18 at the temple every year Netaji's associates observe his death anniversary. Over the years, several Indian officials have visited Renkoji to pay their respects to Subhas Chandra Bose: Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru was the first dignitary to visit the site in October 1957.President Dr. Rajendra Prasad followed him a year later.In 1969 Indira Gandhi visited and former Prime Minister of India Atal Bihari Vajpayee, , first visited the temple during his term as Foreign Minister. He later on December 9, 2001 visited it during his official visit to Japan . In 2000, Jaswant Singh the then Indian Minister of External Affairs, visited the temple in November. The ashes of Netaji are placed in a small golden pagoda.Subhash Chandra Bose's followers and Indians from all over the world come here to pay their respects to Netaji. There is a sign-in note book, right next to the entrance to the Temple office where you can sign in and pay your respects when you visit this temple.
