Remembering major terror attacks on Anti Terrorism Day

New Delhi: The death anniversary of ex-prime minister of India, Shri Rajiv Gandhi is also observed as Anti Terrorism Day all over the country on 21 May. Terrorism, the most heinous crime by the mankind against the mankind has become the biggest fear for Indians today. And of course every citizen of the country is responsible for driving out this phantom of fear. Fighting against this crime has become the moral duty of every Indian. At the same time whole nation mourns two minutes of silence to mark solidarity with the world in its fight against terrorism and to memorize Rajiv Gandhi. On this day let's rewind back and look at some of the most gruesome terror attacks around the world: June 22, 1985: Air India Flight 182 is blown up by a bomb put on board the flight from Canada to India by Sikh terrorists. All 329 people on board, most of them Canadian citizens, are killed. At the time, the deadliest terrorist attack ever, and still the deadliest act of terrorism in Canadian history. A second Air India flight from Canada was targeted on the same day, but the bomb exploded at Narita Airport, in the luggage outside the aircraft, killing two baggage handlers, bringing the total death toll of the act to 331. December 25, 1986: Iraqi Airways Flight 163 is hijacked, and 60 passengers and 3 crew members die when it crashes after a hand grenade is detonated in the cockpit. The pro-Iranian group "Islamic Jihad" claimed responsibility. April 21, 1987: Car bomb at bus terminal in Colombo, Sri Lanka kills 110 people. This attack was carried by LTTE. April 23, 1988: A powerful car bomb explodes near to a vegetable market, damaging vehicles and many buildings, in the Tabbaneh area, Tripoli, Lebanon. No one claims for responsibility in this case, which kills 69 people with injures another 111. September 19, 1989: Suitcase-bomb destroys UTA Flight UT-772 en route to Paris, killing all 171 passengers and crew. Libyan intelligence involved. August 13, 1990: Armed attack by Division 3 of 6 Eravur LTTE on Div. 3 or 6, Eravur. 116 Muslims die and 20 are injured. October 18, 1991: Two time bomb blast, when people watching a Hindu pageant of Ramila, Rudrapur, Uttar Pradesh, India, which blame on Sikh separatist militant. Killing at least 41 and injuring 140 people. March 17, 1992: Israeli Embassy bombing by "Islamic Jihad" in Buenos Aires, Argentina; 29 killed, 242 injured. March 12, 1993: Mumbai car bombings leave 257 dead with 1,400 others injured. July 18, 1994: The umbrella organization of all Jewish institutions in Argentina, AMIA, is car-bombed, killing 85 people and injuring over 300. Attributed to Hezbollah. June 14-19, 1995: Budyonnovsk hospital hostage crisis, At least 147 civilians and 25 Russian troops were killed. December 30, 1996: A Delhi bound Brahmaputra Express carrying 1,200 people on board, following a blast in Kokrajhar, Assam, India. Blame placed on tribal Bodo guerillas group, which kills at least 250 people and injures many more. November 19, 1997: A car bomb blast nearby D. Rama Naidu Film Studio, Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, India, kills 23, include six local television journalist and injures 31 people, include local film star, Mohan Babu. August 7, 1998: U.S. embassy bombings in Dar es Salaam and Nairobi, killing 225 people and injuring more than 4,000, by al-Qaeda. December 24, 1999: Indian Airlines Flight 814 from Kathmandu, Nepal, to Delhi is hijacked. One passenger is killed and some hostages are released. After negotiations between the Taliban and the Indian government, the last of the remaining hostages on board Flight 814 are released in exchange for release of three terrorists. May 17, 2000: Buddhist festival bomb attack in Sri Lanka kills 29, wounds 80. LTTE blamed. September 11, 2001: Hijackers slam jetliners into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon and a fourth hijacked jet crashes in a Pennsylvania field, killing nearly 3,000 people. Oct. 12, 2002: Nearly 200 people, including seven Americans, are killed in bombings in a nightclub district of the Indonesian island of Bali. Authorities blame Jemaah Islamiyah. May 16, 2003: Bomb attacks in Morocco kill at least 28 people and injure more than 100. The government blames "international terrorism," and local militant groups linked to Al Qaeda. March 11 2004: Explosions aboard four commuter trains arriving at Atocha station during the morning rush hour. Bombs were in backpacks, and detonated using a mobile phone, killing191 people and injuring 1,800. Spanish government of Jose Maria Aznar at first suggests the Basque separatist group Eta is to blame, but later concedes the attacks were the work of Islamists. Popular anger at being "misled" leads to victory of the opposition at a general election a few days later. September 1 - 3 2004: Islamist gunmen take over 1,000 hostages, mostly children, at a school in North Ossetia. After a three-day siege many of the hostages are killed in an explosion in the school gym, after which Russian troops storm the building. The final death toll is over 330, many of them children. 800 more are injured. July 7, 2005: London bombings – Suicide bombers attack one double-decker bus and three London Underground trains, killing 52 people and injuring over 700, occurring on the first day of the 31st G8 Conference. The attacks are the first suicide bombings in Western Europe. October 29, 2005: Multiple bomb blasts hit markets in Delhi, India, leaving at least 61 dead and more than 200 injured. July 11, 2006: A series of explosions rock commuter trains in Mumbai, India, killing 209 and wounding another 714 civilians. August 14, 2007: The 2007 Qahtaniya bombings in northern Iraq kill at least 500 people October 18, 2007: Twin suicide bombings occur in Karachi near a truck carrying former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto through a crowded street of supporters eight hours after her return from exile, despite 20,000 security officers having been assigned to protect her. At least 136 are killed and 387 are wounded; Bhutto escapes unharmed. The Taliban or Al Qaeda are suspected. December 27, 2007: Pakistani opposition leader Benazir Bhutto is assassinated by an attacker who shoots her after a campaign rally in Rawalpindi and then blows himself up; at least 20 are known dead. A Baitullah Mehsud Islamic Terrorism leader or elements within the Pervez Musharraf government are suspected. May 13, 2008: Jaipur. A simultaneous bomb blast at eight different sites, including a crowded shopping site and a Hanuman temple, a self-styled Indian Mujahideen, (a collaboration of LeT & SIMI) has claimed responsibility. September 20, 2008: Islamabad. The Marriott Hotel is attacked by a massive suicide car bomb, killing over 60 and injuring 250. The blast caused a natural gas leak fire, which destroyed the hotel further. Hours before the blast, President Asif Ali Zardari addressed a joint session of Parliament and promised to root out terrorism. November 26-29, 2008: Mumbai. Armed terrorists opened fire at eight different sites in a coordinated attack killing 173 and injuring 327. They wielded automatic weapons and attacked locations including a train station, hotels, restaurants, a police station, and a hospital. Some terrorists took hostages and high military grade explosives (RDX) were found nearby; at least eight explosions were reported. October 28, 2009: Peshawar, Pakistan A car bomb is detonated in a woman exclusive shopping district, and over 110 die with 200 or more injured. March 8, 2010: Lahore, Pakistan Three suicide bombings occurred on two separate days, in which a car bomb struck a Federal Investigation Agency's office, and the other two suicide bombers detonated simultaneously whilst targeting a passing military convoy within the eastern Pakistani city of Lahore, which is located in eastern Pakistan. Over 72 killed and 190 injured. May 2011: At least 80 people have been killed and 140 others injured in twin blasts at a military training center in Pakistan's northwestern city of Charsadda. The Pakistani Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attack, terming it the "first revenge" for the killing of Osama bin Laden. July 2011: Three simultaneous blasts rocked India's financial capital. Two of the bombings were in the southern business centre parts of the city (Zaveri Bazaar and the Opera House). At this time it is still unknown if local or foreign groups are behind the attacks. 20 killed, 130 injured. May 2012: A suicide bomber dressed as a soldier blew himself up during a rehearsal for the annual Unity Day parade in the Yemeni capital Sana'a. At least 120 people were killed and hundreds more were injured, as several high-ranking officials escaped unharmed. Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula claimed responsibility for the attack. February 2013: Two blasts occurred at crowded intersections in the Indian city of Hyderabad, killing 17 and injuring more than 100 others. Authorities suspected the Islamist Indian Mujahideen group of being behind the bombings.
