Kanpur: A first year student of Government Polytechnic College in Kalyanpur, about 15 km from Kanpur, committed suicide by hanging himself from ceiling fan after alleged harassment by seniors.
The deceased, first year mechanical engineering diploma student, has been identified as Himanshu Vishwakarma.
The incident was brought to the notice of police by Niraj Chouhan, victim's room-mate.
Police said that Himanshu was staying at a hostel in Vinayakpur and he had not attended classes from past two days.
Police also said that Niraj was out of station from last two days and upon his arrival, he found the door closed. Later, he managed to open a window of the room and discovered the dead body of Himanshu.
Niraj said that Himanshu was harassed by seniors for wearing jeans inside the college premises.
Meanwhile, police has registered a case of ragging but none of the students or the management was named in the FIR.
