Srinagar: Two militants of Pakistan-based terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) were killed by the security forces in a fierce gun battle at Gussu village in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday.

The encounter that erupted yesterday resulted in elimination of two LeT terrorists in a joint operation by the Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police.

One terrorist was identified as Manzoor Ahmad Dar while the identity of the second terrorist, who was of foreign origin, is yet to be ascertained.

"Two militants including Manzoor Ahmad Dar of Samboora (Pulwama) and a Pakistani national have been killed in Gusoo village encounter," a senior police officer said.

Two AK47 rifles, four magazines of AK 47 and other war-like stores were recovered from the site of the encounter.

Security forces including troops of 53 Rashtriya Rifles, 183 battalion of CRPF and special operations group (SOG) of state police had surrounded Gusoo village in Pulwama district late Wednesday following reports that two to three militants were hiding inside a house there.

As security forces came closer to the suspected house, the militants fired upon the security forces after which a gunfight broke out which ended around 1.30 am.

"Searches are still going on in the area. The exact identity of the slain Pakistani militant is being established," the official said.

Meanwhile, intelligence inputs have suggested that operatives of LeT are planning to avenge the death of its senior commander Abu Qasim by carrying out a series of bombings or attacks on prominent Indian personalities, public and tourist places on or around the New Year. To carry out the attacks, 18 LeT commanders had already infiltrated into India.
