Guwahati: Kaziranga national park is located on the banks of the mighty Brahmaputra River in the Golaghat and Nagaon districts of Assam. It covers an area of approximately 430-sq-kms. Due to limitless poaching of this prehistoric survivor, the Kaziranga National Park was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1940. It is a World Heritage Site and boasts the highest density of tigers among protected areas in the world.Kaziranga was declared a Tiger Reserve in 2006. The park hosts two-thirds of the world's Great One-horned Rhinoceroses.The park is home to large breeding populations of elephants, wild water buffalo, and swamp deer. Birdlife International for conservation of avifaunal species has recognized Kaziranga national park as an Important Bird Area It has achieved notable success in wildlife conservation, compared to other protected areas in India.Located on the edge of the Eastern Himalaya biodiversity hotspot, the park combines high species diversity and visibility. The best season of Kaziranga National Park are between November and April. Crisscrossed by four major rivers, Kaziranga is a vast expanse of tall elephant grass, marshland, and dense tropical moist broadleaf forests.Including the Brahmaputra the park includes numerous small bodies of water. This park has been the theme of several books, documentaries and songs.In 2005 the park celebrated its centennial after its establishment in 1905 as a reserve forest. Major Wildlife Attractions: The other major wild attractions apart from the great one horned Indian Rhino include a large population of Tigers, Indian Elephants, Swamp Deer or Barasingha,Indian Bison, Sloth Bears, Hog Deer, Leopard Cats, Jungle Cats, Hog Badgers, Wild Boar, Capped Langurs, Hoolock Gibbons, Jackal, Pythons, Monitor Lizards, Wild Buffalo, Otters etc. Best Time to Visit Kaziranga National Park:The best to visit park is from mid-November to early April months. The Park is open daily from 1st November to 30th April. It remains closed from June to September. It is partially open in the months of October and May. The Brahmaputra River bursts its banks during the monsoons which results in flooding the low-lying grasslands and causing animals to migrate from one area to another within the Kaziranga National Park. Excursions: Jeep safari: From 1st November to 30th April Jeep Safari is available. In the months of May & October it could be possible subject to weather and road condition. Timings: 7.30am to 9.30am (Morning) & 2pm to 3.30pm ( Evening) Elephant rides: Elephant rides are available from 1st November to 30th April. First ride is from 5.15am to 6.15 am and Second ride is from 6.30am to 7.30am from November to April (unless census may be scheduled).
