“The process of construction of the Rashtriya Samiti has commenced and is likely to be completed soon. With regard to late Shri Gujral, a plaque in bronze describing his life will be erected at the spot, where he was cremated and remain there till such time as the Rashtriya Samiti is completed, whereafter the plaque will be shifted to its designated place at the Rashtriya Samiti.”
Born on December 04, 1919, I.K. Gujral served as the 12th Prime Minister of India from April 1997 to March 1998, who was popular for his 'Gujral Doctrine', as he pressed for cordial relations with neighbouring countries.
In the mid-1980s, he left the Congress party and joined the Janata Dal party.
Gujral was elected from the Jalandhar parliamentary constituency in northern Punjab state in the 1989 elections to the Parliament.
He was the Foreign Affairs Minister in the Cabinet of former Prime Minister V. P. Singh.
He also served as junior minister and held several other portfolios including Communications and Parliamentary Affairs and Information and Broadcasting.
He was also appointed as Ambassador of India to the erstwhile Soviet Union.
He died at the age of 92 due to lung infection in Gurgaon city of northern Haryana state on November 30, 2012.
