Kolkata, May 9 : People across West Bengal and in neighbouring Bangladesh today celebrated the 152nd birth anniversary of Nobel laureaute Rabindra Nath Tagore with zeal and devotion.
Tagore was born on May 7, 1861, but his birth anniversary is celebrated according to Bengali calendar, and his birthday falls on 25th of Baisakh.
Rabindra Bharati University in Kolkata organized the birth anniversary in his birth place at Jorasanko in Kolkata today.
‘Jorasanko Thakur Bari' was the ancestral home of Tagore but after the independence and after the formation of Rabindra Bharati university, the home is maintained by the university and classes in drama, music, arts and fine arts are held here.
The celebrations began early in the morning as followers of Tagore came from far off places to pay their tributes to Bengal's greatest poet. Students, teachers, former students, faculties, alumni participated in the programme.
Some of them recited Rabindrasangeet. Visitors also went around to see the rooms, furniture, dresses and books used by Tagore, alongwith his photographs.
Dr.Sabyasachi Basu Roychowdhury, vice chancellor of Rabindra Bharati university said, Tagore was the first Asian and Indian to get the Nobel prize for literature.
The Jorasanko Thakurbari was established in 1784 by Tagore's family, named as Ram Bhawan, the oldest building in this complex. This place is not only famous for Rabindranath Tagore but also for Abanindranath Tagore and Gaganendranath Tagore, both great painters of Oriental art and Bengal School of painting.
